The Castaic Lake Water Agency's property on Bouquet Canyon Road, which includes Central Park, was a Los Angeles County rehabilitation center for court-referred persons ¤ known colloqually as the Saugus Drunk Farm.

I have been browsing your wonderful pages for several years, and they have been so interesting and provided much information regarding my family history. I am a displaced 5th generation Native Daughter of California now residing in Louisiana, but remember visiting the SCV many times while growing up in Montrose, CA in the '40's and'50's.

I am a direct descendent of Ramon Perea, who established the Ruiz Cemetery on the death of his wife, Antonia Duran Perea, at the age of 34 in 1888. Hers is the stone that is always referred to as the oldest stone in the cemetery. Ramon was my father's grandfather and he told my father that Antonia asked him to bury her on the hill behind their ranch house in the San Francisquito Canyon, and he did. He said he put the cemetery high on the hill so in case there ever was a flood down the canyon, it would not wash the cemetery away. How right he was! The San Francisquito flood waters did not wash away the cemetery. My father also helped search, recover, and bury flood victims, including his relatives, the Ruiz family. I was saddened to hear of the recent fire, however, grateful that once again the Ruiz Cemetery survived.

I was so interested in the Ruiz Family Funeral photo (GRO854 in the SCV San Francisquito Canyon pages) because the young man in the center leaning on a shovel handle is possibly my father. I have no photos of him as a young man, they were either washed away in another flood or disappeared after the Sylmar earthquake. However, photos I have from the early 1930's after he and my mother married in 1932 look much like this young man. If anyone has identification of this young man in the picture, please let me know. My father was Mauricio (Maury) Rodriguez, son of Carlos (Charlie) Rodriguez and Josefa Perea Rodriguez, daughter of Ramon and Antonia Perea.

I am extremely interested in the Perea genealogy, but still need much information and family stories. I would also like information on the Native Americans who are buried in the cemetery. I would like to sort out who is who there, I have photos taken in 1999 of all stones we could find.

Also the Newhall School picture of 1911 identifies my father's sister as number 16, "Margaruerite Roderguez", and she is indeed in that photograph. She is also cousin to the Kitchline students listed. Thanks Karen Murray for sending me that web page.

If anyone has other Newhall School pictures with her or her brother, Mauricio Rodriguez, born in 1908, in them, I would be intensely interested in getting a copy, will pay all costs. I am not sure, but I believe they both went to San Fernando High School if anyone has class pictures circa 1918 to 1926 or information on students in those schools I would be grateful for it or any other information they may have relating to my family.

It is exciting to see that we can offer some information that we had never known before to our children. What a joy to be able to see our family mentioned in a historical site. How many people can say that. I look forward to learning more about our family and to keep coming back. I thank you for the chance to learn about our personal family history and the opportunity to share it with my children.

I see that my sister has corrected the history on Dillenbeck Canyon Market. I often dream about the wonderful Solemint store and all the strange items it held. Charlie Dillenbeck actually worked at Solemint store before opening Dillenbeck's with his partner Frank Collins who owned Collins Poultry. My sister Gail and I use to ride our horses to Solemint store and get candy and a soda pop. In 1965 I was Miss Tri Canyon (Soledad, Mint, and Sand) and reigned over the grand opening of the freeway that changed the shape of Solemint junction for ever.

I am Charlie Dillenbecks daughter. He was the one who opened the Dillenbeck Market Store. He didn't die in a car accident. That was my grandfather and my brother-in-laws brother was also killed. They were hit by a sherrif who was chasing another car at the intersection of Sierra Hwy and Sand Canyon. My father sold the Dillenbeck Market around 1970 and moved to Parker Arizona. They died in the 1980s. The Dillenbeck Market was torn down about 3 years ago. This is just off the top of my head so I may not be exact on the dates but I did want the information about who died in that accident corrected.

Regarding Beale's Cut (in the message below): No marker currently commemorates Beale's Cut because the markers have been stolen, and replaced, and stolen again over the years. As for plans to repair the cut to its condition prior to the late-1990s El Nino storms, when it partially filled in: The cut is on private property, owned by the same landowner who owns the adjacent (defunct) Newhall Refinery site. There are plans eventually to develop the former refinery site as an industrial park. The city of Santa Clarita has expressed interest in preserving and possibly even improving the cut when the development plans go forward. It's not a simple matter of digging it out; there is a safety factor if the sheer walls come tumbling down again in a future storm.

I hiked into Beale's cut on 4/11/02 from the San Fernando side. I was surprised that nothing is mentioned about it on the marker by the road. It mentions the tunnel, but not the "cut". Is there any plans to clean up the trail into the cut? Also, there is a cut on the other side of the 14 off of Remson that I found while searching for the Beale cut. Do you have any information on it? Thank you, Jon
