I have spent many hours on this site,it is beyond words.I remember an old man by the name of Gillespie who sharpened my saw blades for me. This was in the early 1970's. He lived in an old unpainted house at the end of the street where the old Saugus depot stood, can't remember the name of it now.He used to tell me stories about being a school bus driver and driving back up into San Fransiscito[sp] Canyon to pick up students and having to deal with the very long teams of mules pulling very large wagons of equipment for the DWP power stations. They were so long he said that they would disappear around a turn so the driver could not see them for some time! I have many more hours if not days to spend on this site. I lived in the SCV area from 1966 to 1980 and graduated from Hart high in 1971. Fantastic site! Now I know where to send copies of all the negs I have of Newhall from the '30's on. I graduated Hart in '68, my sister, Patti in '71, Mom & Dad (Myron & Martha Hitchcock) in '49. Dad died 11 years ago, Mom & I live together, Patti is still in Valencia. Our Grandfather, Ralph (Shorty) Hitchcock had the gas station at Lyons & Hwy 5 back in the '30's, later moved to Railroad Cyn (Pine St) where we grew up beyond the high voltage towers, the only thing I wasn't allowed to climb in the Cyn! I enjoyed seeing old friends signing the guestbook, thanks for the memories....... Golden Spike Celebration: The initial photos from yesterday's event, along with March Fong Eu's speech and a news story, can be found on this site by going to the index and clicking on "Lang." We did shoot video, but copies are not yet available. As for the question about photos of the original driving of the golden spike in 1876, no photographer was present. You will also find some good histories, from the 1976 centennial program, under "Lang." Thanks for visiting! First time to view the website. Am really impressed. My family moved to Newhall in Placerita Canyon in the mid 40's. One of my great Uncles, Mathews was in the power house when the dam washed out. He and his whole family were washed away. I enjoyed living in Newhall from the 7th grade up and was in the first class to go all the way thru the new Hart High and graduated in 1952. Will be attending the high school reunion at Hart Park on the 22nd of this month. I was born in Piru, but moved to San Francisquito Canyon when I was two....my grandparents, Bert and "Mom" Hunick had a small ranch above the St. Francis Dam. Dad drove school bus for a couple of years before going to work for DWP at Power House #1. Am the oldest of the four "Deem" kids, and went by the Dam wreckage twice a day every day to school...Saugus Elementary and Hart High. Remember family stories of the disaster, and my dad, his two brothers and his sister all attended the San Francisquito School that was flooded out. I am amazed at the interest today in the history of the area. Wish I had paid more attention to what my grandparents and parents talked about. I do have some old family pictures, tho. Was a great place to grow up, and I am still proud of my education this day.....Hart was a great school. I enjoy visiting all the old sites via the comfort of my computer.....keep up the good work!
